This alphabet came into use in (around) 1955, and is approved by NATO, the
International Civil Aviation Organization, the FAA, and the International
Telecommunication Union. Different bodies prefer different spellings of these words.
It is commonly used by all branches of the US Armed Services. The British sometimes
substitute Indigo for India.
There have been several such alphabets in use for at least the last hundred and fifty
years, and in many languages other than English.
Before 1954, the US Navy used the following phonetic radio alphabet: Able Baker
